Covid-19 Installation - Media Around the Pandemic

This project was completed whilst in full lockdown during the spring and summer of 2020. Living at home with my parents made me aware of the difference in options and comfort levels of living through a pandemic. each day more numbers and information would role in through the media surrounding us, this inspired me to create visual pieces to document the emotions felt by individuals at home.

By using newspapers and my own images, I was able to create compositions that I felt communicated the frustrations I was feeling of being trapped but also the confusion of all the information, that changed daily. My father’s pieces reflect his worries around his health with a suppressed immune system whilst the virus spread.

Beyond the Mask

This installation design mock-up was completed in my home landing, as this was the only available space for me to use, to emulate what I would have done in a gallery or public space. The installation was created using individual masks hung up using fishing line in the shape of the death toll curve. Whilst all together this pattern had a clear visual effect and told a story of the pandemic, each individual mask also had a story. I had individuals submit their worries, concerns and feelings about masks and their role within the pandemic. These individual messages were then written, stitched or printed onto the masks on the inside, to represent the hidden emotions everyone had throughout. On the front of the masks were Government slogans used throughout the pandemic like “Hands, Face, Space”, to show the control and regulations implemented to slow the spread. These main slogans were printed using LinoCut blocks to create a subtle link to the repetion of the media throughout in the printed headlines and newspapers.
